THE KAMPUCHEAN KID

Hunger
Like an impatient rat
Keeps gnawing at my ribs
Nights and nights I lie in bed
Trying hard to sleep
Mother, where are you?
Mother, where am I?

The nuns came yesterday
To give me a piece of bread
It looked so good
I could not bear to eat it
So I kept it in my bed
Mother, where are you?
I want you to share it

This morning when I awoke
I reached out for my bread
It wasn't there
The rats had got it!
I've waited and now I'm late

Mother, where are you?
Mother, where am I?
Mother, I can't share it anymore
I need your arms
I need to cry
